Fantastic Week of Snowshoeing in the Chablais
Snowshoe Traverse of the Chablais
The great strength of this holiday is that it provides the opportunity to get to know a beautiful and little visited part of the French Alps. Our group of 4 with guide stayed in a different village each night and were treated to a high standard of accommodation, excellent food and a warm welcome. Each day starts with a long ascent, before becoming more undulating passing over isolated cols with great views and traversing forested mountain slopes, before finishing with the inevitable descent back to the valley floor for the night. Our guide Paul was excellent and a pleasure to be with in the mountains. All in all a top trip!

Well organised traverse of Lanzarote on the GR131
Walking Lanzarote - The Island of Eternal Spring
Firstly, this trip dovetails superbly with KE’s Fuerteventura holiday - combining it is a simple matter of using the cheap inter-island ferry which takes about 30 mins. The agency that KE uses on both islands is very well run, with outstanding guides, exceptional accommodation and superb food. TheLanzarote trip follows the GR across the island, deviating only to cross the cliffs and to climb a volcano, giving terrific views. This trip also includes afternoon cultural visits, optional wine tast ing, and a relaxing visit to Graciosa. Unusually all meals are included - these were of a high standard. Our leader, Erik was brilliant, ably assisted by Lettie. This is a strongly recommended trip, all the more so over the English winter when it can be hard to find suitable walking trips that don’t involve long haul flights or third world countries.

Great Hiking in a hidden gem!
El Salvador Volcano Trek
El Salvador has gotten a "bad rap" in our country (US). Contrary to media presentations, the people were lovely and welcoming. The country is beautiful. Our guide, Francis, was lovely. He was very enthusiastic about his country and a wonderful ambassador. The hikes were challenging (especially San Miguel/Chaparrastique). The trip notes did not adequately prepare me for climbing in scree... In fact, the trip notes and web site in general need updating. Be sure to take an indigo dying le sson in Suchitoto at Arte Anil. Irma is FAB!! On the down side, my daughter is vegetarian, and 2 of the 5 lunches provided by the tour were NOT vegetarian. "They didn't know"..... Not sure whose job it was to inform or make it right.. Thank goodness I had a big supply of peanut butter! Finally, the last 2 nights were at a beach hotel owned by the KE rep. Full disclosure, we did everything wrong when we "released" sea turtles at the beach. Beware! (Don't touch them with bare hands, don't release until dark, don't release in the water). Despite, the negatives I have listed, it was well worth it!!!

KE Adventure reply

Thank you for your review. We are pleased you enjoyed your holiday despite finding some of the hiking challenging. It's great to hear you thought your KE guide was a wonderful ambassador for El Salvador. Thank you for letting us know about the 2 lunches which weren't vegetarian. We will investigate how this occurred and make sure it doesn't happen in the future. At KE we don't condone the releasing of turtles by our clients and we have spoken to our local agent about this.

Laurence Hallett's Finland Winter Venture
Finland Winter Activity Week
A widely varied adventure week in snowbound forests and frozen lakes. Flying into the small airport at Kuusamo, a 40 minute drive took us to the activity centre in a remote and picturesque setting. Accommodated in 4 bed (but 2 person) lodges for the 8 days, the lodges are well equipped with 2 two tier bunks, kitchen with microwave and kettle, sofa, television and en-suite bathroom facilities. The only thing maybe participants would like to bring is their own brew kit. I brought Nescafe 3 in 1 co ffee sachets and they proved to be a good way to start and end a day. Meals were taken in the restaurant in the main building - and a wide variety of food was given over the course of the stay. The activity centre is a family run business and meals cooked by the owners - giving a true meaning to the phrase 'home cooked'. All refreshments (tea, coffee cold soft drinks) came with the meals; leaving beer and wine to purchase at our leisure.

In the forests and frozen lakes surrounding the activity centre, we were guided by Elisa, a young newly qualified Winter guide. Despite being recently accredited - Elisa literally has a lifetime of Winter wilderness experience; and it was clearly evident from the opening day, until the very end that we were in the hands of an expert. Our group had little or no experience and she rightly took everyone from scratch - giving clear explanations and demonstrations. Our trips into the countryside by cross country ski and snow shoe gave an excellent learning experience with ample time for resting and photos etc. The skiing and 2 day snow shoe treks were well served with lunch breaks at remote huts where coffee and snacks were heated on open pine wood fires.

The 2 day snow shoe trek included an overnight stop in a remote lodge where Elisa hosted us well with reindeer stew for the main evening meal. In fact - on all days, the food was 'self serve - all you can eat' and plentiful. Saunas featured frequently on the trip - and proved a great way to unwind at the end of a day. A key event on the week was a lengthy husky sled trip into the wilderness. Formed into 2 man teams, with tuition given by the custodians of a nearby husky business - 1 person driving and the other sitting, blanket wrapped on the sled - taking photos!

Some ice hole fishing (I caught 2 perch!) and snow hole construction completed the activities. The kit list is comprehensive but the optional clothing hire will see you through anything the Finnish Winter can throw at you. Be prepared for temperatures down to minus 24 degrees C in January. The trip wound up with an end of week reindeer stew and back to our cabins we went to pack for the home journey. Midway through packing and relaxing - I got a frantic WhatsApp call from Elisa offering me outside to view a surprise appearance by the Northern lights! They did not disappoint, and proved a great way to top off this Winter activity trip. All in all - a magical venture, well hosted by Elisa, and recommended!

Memorable
Sweden Arctic Family Adventure
Thanks to KE and particularly Tom for help and support when traveling at a worrying time. Great holiday. Highly recommend it. Dog sledding through the snowy forest and on the frozen lake was magical. Fussy eaters beware that the menu is very limited but the food is of a high standard. Cabins clean and warm. Drying cupboards are fab and used every day. We travelled with our 11 year old. Guides friendly and accommodating. Anneta was the stand out for us, giving great insight into the life of the S ami people. Highly recommend the trip and KE. Will be booking our next trip soon.

Wonderful holiday!
Bike Jordan Dead 2 Red
This is a great holiday. A good level of fitness is needed as there are a few long, but rewarding climbs. (There is always the option to take advantage of the support vehicles.) The scenery is stunning and the food excellent. Anas is an excellent tour guide - very knowledgeable about the history and geography of Jordan. At the main tourist spots local guides escort the group with more detailed information. KE support local family run hotels and accommodation, which is excellent. Highlights inclu de Mount Nebo, floating on the Dead Sea, Karak and Shobak castles, Petra, the night in Wadi Rum and swimming in the Red Sea (ie everything!). We added a day in Madaba at the beginning (very interesting buildings and mosaics) and then the 2 day extension in Aqaba, which again is very worthwhile. Swimming and snorkelling were great! We would strongly recommend this holiday for fit cyclists!

Exceeded all my expectations
Bike Jordan Dead 2 Red
Prior to travelling to Jordan my expectations for this trip were already very high and so it is a measure of how much I enjoyed it to say that almost everything was better than I could have hoped for! The organisation prior to arrival in Jordan has been most efficient and gave me a sense of confidence that I would be well looked after and supported throughout. Once in Jordan the tour leader (Anas) took over personal responsibilty for all aspects of the organisation. He is a fantastic leader and guide. No matter is too big for him to attend to and issues are resolved quickly. He is supported by a fantastic team who accompanied us throughout the tour. They provide logistical back up to ensure everyone (and their luggage) arrives safely at each destination. It is a challenging cycle ride but the tremendous level of support means that nobody ever feels overwhelmed and can use the coach instead of cycling. Each fantastic day is followed by one that is even better. The range of experiences is amazing. The landscapes change frequently, and interposed into the cycling are other interactions with local people and visits to place sof interest. No two days are anything like the same and the tour truly does a really great insight into the country of Jordan and its peoples. It is fantastic value for money.

A great desert experience
Edge of the Sahara Trek
This is a very well organised trip. Our guide for the week, Mohammed, ensured that we had the best desert experience possible. The walking is relatively straight forward although climbing up over the dunes sometimes felt like you were trying to walk up a descending escalator. The highlight of the week was climbing a high dune to watch a wonderful sunset over the desert. Our cook Ali produced excellent food, tasty salads at lunchtime and warming tagines in the evening. The camels that carried all our gear provided great subjects for photographs throughout the trek. Overall a great way to experience an adventure in the desert.

AWESOME! Holiday of a lifetime!
Jordan's Wadi Rum and Petra
If you are looking for an adventure away from civilisation then this trip is for you! We were transported into another world on entering the Wadi Rum and Petra. As with other reviews I would agree that this is physically more challenging than described so you need to be fit to walk, scramble, climb 6hrs per day in the heat. The Mariam Hotel in Madaba on the first night is very basic - hostel standard but we were only there for 7hrs. In hindsight I would have liked to see more of Madaba so do con sider adding an extra day. Definitely take a thermorest mat with you for camping as the foam mattresses provided are quite thin. The location of the campsites and Bedouin site were wonderful. Views from the campsite, sun rises and sunsets were breathtaking. The hotel facilities (pool and bar) at both Hotels (Madaba and Petra) were closed. As a Muslim country the sale of alcohol is limited to hotels so suggest you bring your own as both bars at the hotels provided by KE were closed. The hotel in Petra - Edom Hotel was ideally situated next to the entrance into Petra. We had a truly exceptional guide Murad and support staff - Ali, Salem and team. I cannot speak more highly of them and they certainly made the holiday special. Murad was extremely knowledgeable on the history and culture of Jordan. I took poles and was glad I did! Walking through the sand in the desert and up the 800 steps to the Monastery (and 800 steps down!) in Petra and up to Jebel Haroun (Aaron's burial site) - they came in very useful! Our trip was in November so shorter days (gets dark by 5pm) so you might want to consider that when booking in the winter months. KE provided excellent transport arrangements - both on arrival in Jordan and departure. Highly recommend this trip.

A great week in The White Mountains.
Walking the White Mountains of Crete
A great weeks walking with a variety of mountains, coastal paths and gorges. The first days walk up Gingilos is the toughest days walking of the week and in my opinion a hard grade 6 walk. Jean our guide was very knowledgable about the history and nature of Crete. He also had a good sense of humour !!……. Swimming in the sea is a must and was warm, once in. The food was excellent and accommodation comfortable and we were very lucky with the weather as storms had hit the week before. A really enjoyable week and now looking to book my next K E holiday.

Remember White Mountains is a Grade 6
Walking the White Mountains of Crete
The White Mountains Grade 6 Trek is interesting & diverse in many aspects! It is a mixture of rugged coastline, challenging climbs, ( particularly on the first day ) & a varied standard of accommodation & cuisine! The Gingillos Climb on the first day was tough, …I would say a 6+ Climb. We had just met the previous evening & in my case the KE. Leader took a while to meet me in the Airport ( So please make sure YOU have clarity on Meeting arrangement) . We drove t o our accommodation, & whilst the food was wholesome & hearty & the fellow group members affable, the rooms were basic & cold! The next day on Gingillos seemed to be never ending with scrambling, scree & rock climbing mostly led by the helpful & able bodied & not always on tracks…! The remaining days were interesting, the Samaria Gorge, Pachnes & the Arcadia Gorge! Fellow group members were a great help in administering first aid & checking to see that all were enjoying! We had a beautiful lunch after the Arcadia Gorge walk… ! Accommodation & food was mixed, in my opinion… A very challenging start in this Trip but interesting & enjoyable? days thereafter!

Cycling The Danube - Passau to Vienna

Cycling along the danube is an easy, relatively flat route with nice places to stop along the way. some parts of the route are more picturesque than others, but we all enjoyed ourselves.

Brilliant walking holiday in a fantastic area of Scotland
Wilderness Walking - Wilds of Assynt
Really enjoyable holiday in a beautiful area. The accommodation was excellent and breakfasts were really good where we were looked after very well. The scenery, the morning cruise round The Summer Isles and the walking were fantastic as were our group members. Our two guides, Ken and Graham were absolutely brilliant, very informative and looked after the needs of the group very well. They went the extra mile driving us to super places to eat each evening and equally as important they were good f un.

Stunning views, and every day a great day out in the hills, even on rainy days!
Lake District – South Lakes Classics
It was only because our Tuscany holiday with KE had had to be cancelled 2 years running that we thought of booking this holiday. What a shame we hadn't thought of visiting this area before! The views are to die for, the walking challenging but very doable, and as usual, the guides were excellent. Tim and Tom get to live and work in this fabulous landscape, no wonder they are so cheerful and friendly! But finding somewhere to eat in Ambleside was quite a challenge (huge staff shortage in all of the Lake District) so it would be a good idea to check in advance with KE which day of the week is not catered for so that if possible you can book before you arrive. And don't forget the insect spray! Midges and ticks made their presence felt!

A holiday of a lifetime experience
Sikkim - Beneath Kangchenjunga Trek
This trip doesn't seem to have changed since I did it in 1998. We acclimitised in Darjeeling having flown up to Bagodra and then a truck (bangbus) to Darjeeling. We stayed at the Windamere hotel which is a story in itself. A jeep trip to Tiger hill resulted in us missing the sunrise because the electrics caught fire. Then we transferred to the start of the trek. Uphill all the way, slow and steady to the top of the Singalila Ridge (very wet mattresses overnight). Back down after 6 days and then up to Yuksom, Samiti Lake and the Ran Glacier. I have never forgotten the KE trip that year or Millenium year with KE to Nepal and up Himachuli. along with white water river rafting on the Sun Khosi and Mountain biking out of Katmandu.

If you are looking for winter walking of substance, look no further
Walking Holiday on the Captivating Cape Verde Islands
If you are looking for a winter walking holiday of substance, look no further than this excellent adventure with KE. I found Cape Verde to be a hidden gem of a destination for a winter trip. It is conveniently located not too far from the UK but feels a world away from cold, dark January in Edinburgh. The trip is a game of two halves. The first is fast paced: by day six, you will set foot on four different islands, undertaking three internal flights and a ferry journey on the way. You will have scaled the highest peak of the archipelago - Pico de Fogo - and seen a very diverse range of landscapes. And you will be on your fifth different bed for the night. The second half sees the trip settling down on the spectacular island of Santo Antao where you will undertake a series of coastal and mountain hikes which are surprisingly diverse when you take into account the comparatively modest size of the island which you are on. Overall, the walking is reasonably demanding: with almost no flat ground involved, the cumulative and descent over the course of the trip are in the order of 9,000 metres. So walking poles are strongly recommended. The scenery ranges from high, barren and freshly minted volcanic terrain to agricultural fields where coffee, mango and bananas are abundant. This is a well-organised and well-led trip. The accommodation is generally simple, but there's always everything needed for a comfortable stay. The hosts are friendly and the food is hearty and wholesome. Worth noting that the descent of Pico de Fogo is a run down a steep lava field. This makes for rapid progress which is gentle on the knees. As suggested elsewhere, take gaiters in order to keep the stones out of your boots. It is also pretty dusty, so a good idea to take something to cover your mouth and nose. A KE buff is a good start, but if I had my time again I might go further and take a proper dust mask as my lungs felt a bit inflamed for the rest of the trip. In terms of other tips, one thing to be prepared for is the first two days of the trip. If you are on the group flights, you are likely to arrive in Cape Verde at about 1am on day 2 and then be on the 7.30am internal flight to Fogo. There'll be a short walk that day, but best to get as much rest as you can as day 3 begins with at dawn with the ascent of Pico de Fogo. I have been on a good number of KE trips now and my view is that Cape Verde more than holds its own, especially if your circumstances are such as you are looking for winter walking.

Forests and frozen lakes
Finland Wilderness Snowshoe Adventure
This is a great introduction to snowshoeing, largely flat trails and relatively short days. I'd done snowshoeing trips in the mountains and this is very different, the scenery is less dramatic, all forests and great expanses of whiteness. Crossing the frozen lakes and having lunch round a fire, surrounded by three feet of snow were all great new experiences.

The group is very international, only three British people on our trip, though all the others spoke excellent English a
nd we spent a lot of time translating the names of obscure wildlife into French, German and Spanish.

The guide was great, very knowledgeable, laid back and able to cope with a very varied group. The food was good solid winter nourishment though we didn't see a fruit or vegetable all week. the wilderness cabins were not that remote, the food was delivered by car, they were pretty well equipped but you do have to be able to cope with no electricity and running water.

Overall it was a great trip and Finland is a really worthwhile winter destination.
