Trekking in Toubkal: Summer vs. Winter Climbs

The beauty of Morocco's Atlas Mountains is that the hospitable climate makes the alpine range accessible to climb year round.

The highest of these mountains is the mighty Mount Toubkal, residing in Toubkal National Park. At a spectacular 4,167m, it is in fact the highest peak in North Africa, which makes climbing this hiker’s favourite is no small feat.

Choosing when to embark on your Mount Toubkal trek means considering which season appeals most to what you’re looking for. Both summer and winter offer a range of varied benefits for the avid adventurer. We thought we’d lay them out plain and simple so you can decide for yourself.

Trekking Mount Toubkal in Summer

The first quality of summer that makes it markedly different from a winter hike up Mount Toubkal is the weather. Summer promises calmer climes so can leave your ice-axe at the door. Although the ascent is still challenging (4,167m, let’s not forget), the warmth of the Moroccan sun takes away the added challenge of hiking through snow and ice. Peaks that lay beneath mounds of snow only a few months prior are now entirely exposed in a beautiful earthy palette.

On our summer climb up Mount Toubkal, the daily treks will start early, so we can get the days distance in before the peak heat of the Moroccan sun. This means your evenings can be spent enjoying the meals prepared by the tour’s private chef, taking in the other-worldly scenes.

Ascending through the centuries old villages of the Berber Valley, rustic clay edifices are layered atop each other, with lush green farmland rolling out beneath and vast stretches of mountain soaring above. We’ll camp by the crystalline Lake Infi which, against the backdrop of the rust coloured landscape, appears even more azure.

The ascent will have you spending nights camping on blissful Moroccan meadows and take you past stunning waterfalls. Though frozen through winter, you’ll hear the torrent of them before you see them on our summer hike to Mount Toubkal’s summit.

Piqued your interest? We thought so. Well, you can enjoy our popular 8-day Mount Toubkal trek between May and June.

Trekking Mount Toubkal in Winter

A winter trek through Mount Toubkal is a completely unique experience, and there’s no better way to enjoy it than on our Mount Toubkal in Winter holiday. The experience of the climb, first through the quiet foothills of the tranquil valleys, simply taking in the summits as a spectator, then hiking through the crunching snow to Toubkal’s peak, is astonishing.

Given the added difficulty of trekking through the winter conditions, the trails are populated only by keen winter trekkers and are typically quieter than in other seasons. This quietude adds to the serenity of a hike through the silent, snowy peaks and passes.

Though the farmlands may have lost their colour for the winter, or be blanketed in a layer of crisp snow, Berber Valley’s evergreen Juniper trees intersperse verdant flashes at the foot of the range. Plus, a winter trek means that you’ll encounter uninterrupted views of the Atlas Mountains that are made even more awe-inspiring by the gorgeous alabaster white from the snowfall.

To see a winter sunset from Toubkal is unbeatable. The effusion of colours across the skyline burns in stark contrast to the niveous landscape all around. This white becomes dyed with the sun’s pink and amber rays before an extraordinary night sky is revealed.

Spread across 8 days, you can enjoy this winter adventure holiday between November and April.

Hopefully this has helped you decide which Mount Toubkal trek is right for you. However, if you still can’t make up your mind (we don’t blame you), there is, of course, another alternative: you could do both...
