25 Top Tips for skiing the Kings Trail

Tav Kelly, KE's Marketing Manager recently skied the Kungsleden Trail (or Kings Trail) in Sweden. Check out her top tips.

PLEASE NOTE: From 2019 onwards we use snowmobiles for the transfers instead of dog sleds.

"I love doing KE trips and passing on my top tips to you all. It's sometimes the little things like these that make your trip so much more enjoyable".

Tav's 25 Top Tips from Skiing the Kings Trail are;

1)   - Make sure your emergency sleeping bag is tiny... beg borrow and steal if you can. It’s worth it as you carry it all day.
2)   - Bring Robinson’s concentrate so you can have yummy tasting water.
3)   - Mark all your equipment with duct tape or coloured string.
4)   - If you like to be cold at night sleep in the bottom bunk.
5)   - If you like to be warm sleep on the top.
6)   - Tie string or laces on to your zippers so you can open and close them easily with cold hands or gloves on.
7)   - Go sledging- take a plastic sack to put your roll mat in.
8)   - Buy a roll mat in Abisko rather than carry it all the way with you (although make sure you call them to order one)
9)   - Buy deep heat roll on instead of cream - it saves getting it on your hands and also helps with a massage.
10) - Bring crocs or hard soles slippers (good for a quick dash outside to outside loo or see the Northern Lights)
11) - Don't put a hot frying pan on the plastic chopping board - it sets off the fire alarm which beeps all night.
12) - Bring a plastic water bottle not metal - you don’t want it to freeze to your lips on a cold day.
13) - Remember lightweight PJ's and a t-shirt... it’s warm in the huts (most of the time) and it’s good to relax.
14) - Bring a plastic spoon with a long handle (just in case you need to eat your emergency ration).
15) - Take a lightweight Tupperware box for your lunches - an old Chinese takeaway box is perfect.
16) - Pack some Nutella and cinnamon for your porridge.
17) - Don't forget the marmite (if you’re a lover).
18) - Take your SLR camera to Abisko, you can leave it in your main bag when you go on tour.
19) - Do not forget earplugs, and bring a few spares.
20) - Bring a small tipple of Captain Morgan for a hot choc treat.
21) - Take doggie treats (for the dogs).
22) - Strap a lip balm and sun stick around your neck on a piece of string or sunglasses tie.
23) - Waterproof / windproof trousers are a godsend - don't forget these.
24) - Warm your battery packs BEFORE charging your cameras or phones. The cold reduces battery power.
25) - Take a small bottle of shampoo/bodywash on tour - you will get the chance to wash your hair.
