Top 5 Rated Cycling Holidays in Europe

If you’re here, then you probably love the outdoors as much as we do, and cycling holidays are one of the best ways to get out and see a new (or favourite) destination. Choosing a group cycling holiday also gives you the opportunity to meet like-minded cycling enthusiasts.

We’ve taken a look at your reviews and chosen the five cycling holidays that you’ve rated top. It turns out your favourite of our cycling tours are all in Europe, from road cycling holidays through France to taking two wheels down the winding wine roads of Istria.

Geneva to the Med Road Cycle

Following the serpentine thoroughfares that wind through the foothills of the French Alps, this road cycling holiday is a firm favourite.

Your two wheels will take you along the famed Route des Grandes Alpes, from the mountainous regions of eastern France to the quiet, lapping tides of the Mediterranean.

The challenging and rewarding cycle takes just under eight days and picks up a lot of the same road that is used as part of the Tour de France, making this trip a must for any cycling connoisseurs. As well as intense climbs, the route includes descents down exciting sequences of hairpin bends.

Starting in the prepossessing port town of Thonon-les-Bains, spend a night relaxing in this sleepy French commune before your 700km cycling adventure. By Day 1, you’ll be immersed in the spectacular Gallic scenery. Pass through pastoral farmland with an ascent above Lake Geneva that offers views of the awe-inspiring Mont Blanc.

Boasting similar breathtaking landscapes for the rest of the journey, take in the charming chalets, crystalline rivers and pine tree forests before finishing in Menton, a stunning seaside retreat on France’s southern coast.

Tour of Gran Canaria

The dramatic and volcanic landscape of Gran Canaria, just one member of a stunning archipelago off Africa’s west coast, makes for an exciting and impressive cycling holiday.

Our Tour of Gran Canaria takes you on a 5-day adventure of this impressive and sublime landscape. The rugged, untouched terrain is ideal for exploring. You’ll begin from the striking sand dunes of Maspalomas, where the only interruption to the vast stretches of desert is the similarly endless azure coastline that runs parallel. After cycling alongside the Atlantic, we’ll plunge into a deep valley encircled by cliffs made of hardened lava, a drastic contrast to the soft sand dunes. Combining challenging climbs with weaving downhill tracks where you can pick up speed, it’s no wonder this varied and diverse excursion is one of our most popular.

We run this cycling holiday from October to May, but with Gran Canaria’s year-round warmth, you’re guaranteed temperate weathers that are perfect for low-season cycling. You won’t be the only cyclists on the tarmac, either. Given its popularity as a winter cycling destination, many Tour de France competitors use Gran Canaria’s bicycle-friendly scenes to build up their training.

The Wine Roads of Istria, Croatia

Housing a fusion of classic European townscapes, with soaring spires and sun-bleached houses, alongside verdant landscapes, Istria holds outstanding beauty.

The pace here is slower, and our easy-level cycle tour reflects that. Here areas are dictated by colour: Blue Istria is the peninsular’s coastal region; Green Istria describes the natural expanses found inland.

Cycling through Blue Istria, you’ll find the Adriatic glittering in your peripheries. We’ll stop at coastal treasures such as Pula and Porec. You’ll have time to explore these towns, including their historic architecture. Make sure to relax those muscles in the crystal sea salt waters, too.

Following cycling routes into Green Istria, watch as the scenes turn from coastlines and port towns to vineyards, rivers and hilltop villages.

This holiday is about far more than cycling. It’s an experience for all the senses. Indulge in the extraordinary scenery, enjoy the delicious tastes from local wines and olives and inhale the scents of untouched nature.

Balkan Trilogy Road Cycle Tour

This cycling holiday is singular in that, in just one week, you’ll traverse three European countries: Montenegro; Bosnia; and Croatia.

This road cycling holiday allows you to take in the highlights of these incredible eastern European countries. The circular route means your start and finish points are both in the stunning, culturally-rich city of Dubrovnik, where natural and man-made beauty exist in tandem.

The journey includes a cycle through the Dinaric Alps, a range of imposing limestone mountains, and Montenegro’s Lovcen National Park. Here the roads rise above the clouds, so that clouds are the only thing between you and the alpine summits.

From beautiful coastlines to lengthy stretches of plush, green landscapes as well as city scenes, this adventurous cycling holiday misses out on nothing.

High Trails of Macedonia

Satisfy the serious adventurer in you with this off-road, off-grid cycling tour of Macedonia.

Often ignored in comparison to its bordering neighbour, Greece, Macedonia boasts a wealth of hidden treasures. From abandoned churches sunken into lakes, to silently peaceful meadows, to wild Balkan lynx, Macedonia impresses visitors beyond measure.

80% of this 270km cycle tour is off-road. You’ll take your bike through the pine forest trails of Mavrovo National Park, testing your skill with tricky terrains. Macedonia’s diverse landscapes mean that, as well as dense woodland, you’ll also follow winding gravel roads, passing local farm life through the mountainous Leshnica Valley.

As if these spectacular views weren’t rewarding enough, you’ll also enjoy wine tasting and Macedonia’s traditional cuisine at the authentic restaurants where we’ll make our stops.
