Pioneering Mukot Peak Success

Breaking News just in...

A team of 7, including four KE climbers and three Sherpa guides have made the first recorded ascent of 6087 metre, Mukot Peak in a remote area of Nepal on Saturday 17 October. Mukot Peak, which is located in a little-trekked valley in Dolpo in West Nepal, was included in the list of permitted expedition peaks from January this year. The team successfully reached the summit on Saturday following an amazing 10 day trek into the base camp.

Only mountains that appear on the government list of permitted peaks are allowed to be climbed in Nepal. Some peaks are not allowed as their summits are considered sacred places while others lie within restricted zones, where Westerners are not allowed. Mukot Peak was added to the permitted list of expedition peaks from January 2015. KE applied for a peak permit and sent in a reconnaissance team to locate a suitable route and base camp. We are pleased to announce that the first of three groups attempting the peak has been successful.

The group flew to Jhupal, a high airstrip in the Dolpo region of West Nepal, on Tuesday 6th October. They made a 10 day trek, travelling east through the valleys of the Barbung Khola and Mukot Khola to the base camp for Mukot Peak. After a period of acclimatisation and preparation, a team of 4 clients and 3 Sherpa guides made the ascent of the peak. The group will now continue east, crossing several high passes to complete a trekking traverse of Dolpo and should reach Jomsom on the famous Annapurna Circuit on Thursday 22nd October.
